Acupuncture treatment

ancient chinese acupuncture points

As a holistic therapy which treats the person rather than the disease I have found successful results for a wide range of physical and emotional conditions, often as an adjunct to conventional therapies.

Examples of conditions for which acupuncture can be used include:

  • Allergic rhinitis (including hay fever)
  • Depression
  • Dysmenorrhoea (period pain)
  • Facial pain (including craniomandibular disorders)
  • Headache and migraine
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Insomnia and sleep problems
  • Knee pain
  • Low back pain
  • Morning sickness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Neck pain relief
  • Periarthritis of shoulder
  • Postoperative pain
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Side effects of radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy including xerostomia (dry mouth)
  • Sprain
  • Tennis elbow treatment

Acupuncture and fertility

  • Post-pill amenorrhoea
  • Support during embryo transfer
  • Morning sickness during pregnancy
  • Baby in breech position

What to expect during treatment

You will be asked about your current medical symptoms, medical history, diet and digestive system, sleeping patterns and emotional state as well as any treatment you have received so far. Your pulses will be taken and your tongue examined.

I will be looking to discern from this detailed questioning and observation, a pattern of disharmony and will then select an appropriate combination of points to needle. Fine, sterile, disposable needles are used and the process should be almost painless. The most common feeling is a slight pinprick and some dullness around the area needled.

Some techniques I may use alongside acupuncture are:

  • Cupping therapy
  • Electro acupuncture
  • Guasha
  • Moxibustion
  • Ear (auricular) acupuncture
